Sidewalks of South Park

An interactive map of the historic sidewalk stamps in my San Diego neighborhood.

A sidewalk stamp is a small imprint left in wet concrete by the builder who poured it, usually with a name and a date. San Diego’s mild weather has kept many of the ones in South Park readable for more than a century.

I started noticing them on walks and photographing them. The site puts every stamp on a map, 443 so far. Each one is placed from the location data in its photo and labeled with the builder and the year.

The point is to make a small, overlooked piece of the neighborhood’s history easy to find. You can browse all the stamps, then go out and stand on one. As the site says: “Sometimes looking down can be more interesting than looking up.”
