Satellite
A student multimedia studio that made one of the first CD-ROM college catalogs.
Satellite was a student-run multimedia studio at the Savannah College of Art and Design that I co-founded.
There were six of us, all double majors, and we worked a lot like a band: everyone played a few instruments. Graphic design, interface design, video editing, 3D modeling, and more. We could do anything.
Our first project was an interactive college catalog for SCAD, one of the first of its kind. Copies of the 1996–97 edition still turn up for sale online.
I wrote the presentation and the project spec we used to secure a $100,000 production budget from SCAD. I also helped design our identity.
Satellite was the first team I worked on where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Together, we made amazing things, and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.
Years later, SCAD opened a new creative technology building known as the SCAD Satellite for Creative Technology, where design, programming, and STEM meet. I’d like to think the name is a nod to what we started.
Long live Satellite!
