Summer of Rails

A summer challenge to learn Rails, make something useful, and ship it.

In 2006, a lot of people were excited about Ruby on Rails. They had installed it, bought the books, and even built a shopping cart. But months later, they still hadn’t shipped their first Rails app. Neither had I.

So I launched Summer of Rails, a challenge for the Rails community with three steps: learn Rails, make something useful, and badge it. When your project launched, you added a Summer of Rails badge and put it on the list.

In the end, 27 projects made the list, from a home-brewing journal to a Tour de France guessing game. Mine was Graffletopia, my first Rails app, which is still running.

I also gave a talk about Summer of Rails and building Graffletopia at SD Ruby. It became the first episode of the SD Ruby podcast.
